Mama Organa is an eco-company that mainly focuses on production of organic fertilizers and substrates made by reusing food waste, while opening job opportunities for marginalized single mothers.
It started operating in 2017, and since then the company has been talking loudly about composting and the positive impacts of this activity! Over the past 5 years he has collected over 200 tons of biowaste and turned it into something valuable – high quality compost which is used as a base in all fertilizers, substrates and soil improvers that he produces.
Mama Organa also produced a substrate specially made for succulents and cacti, as well as many other products!
But you may ask, what is bio-waste?
Bio-waste, also known as biodegradable waste, is a waste that mainly consists of organic matter, ie. food waste. In addition to food waste, bio-waste can be green waste from the maintenance of parks and green areas, as well as paper waste and even biodegradable plastic. Bio-waste usually comes from households and consists of organic matter that can produce carbon dioxide, water, methane, or other organic molecules.
From the revenues made from sales, the company maintains three job posts, specially intended for the socially endangered categories of citizens. As a small social business, the company strives to raise awareness of food being thrown away and reduce bio-pollution.
In Skopje, over 150,000 tons of bio-waste are generated annually, which ends at Drisla, and creates air pollution by releasing C02, as well as soil pollution by releasing toxins that have a harmful effect on plants.
Urban composting is the direction we need to go!
It can halve the amount of municipal waste, reduce the amount of greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere, but also encourage the development of urban gardens and communities in the neighbourhood.
This is what Mama Organa, together with local authorities and other stakeholders, is striving to achieve in the coming years. Mama Organa is striving for change and plans to open the first large composting plant in Skopje by April 2022, hoping that this will encourage local authorities to follow suit and create a sustainable bio-waste composting network.
